About the Author

Bellamkonda Ramaraya, a literary prodigy from Andhra Pradesh, was the son of Hanumayamma and Mohanaraya. He was born in December 1875 at Pamidipadu village, Guntur District, and died on 27-10-1914. During his short span of life of 38 years, he produced a total of 143 works, which include independent shastra works, exhaustive commentaries on shastra works, poems, commentaries on poetical works, manuals on Vedanta, and many stotra-s. While more than half of these works remain in the form of manuscripts, some of them were published by his admirers.

Shankara bhashya vimarsha: In this work of 371 pages, the author criticised the views of Ramanuja and established that Shankara's sutra-bhashya alone should be taken as interpreting the Brahma-sutra-s correctly.

Bhagavadgita bhashyarka prakashika: This work in two volumes is the magnum opus of the author. In this work, he upholds Shankara's interpretation of the Gita at every step, pointing out how any other interpretation is untenable.

Sharadagama: It is a commentary on Siddhanta Kaumudi and the Karakanta portion.

Besides several works on philosophy, he wrote Champu Samudra manthana, Rukmini parinaya, and Rama parinaya, and poems like Garuda-sandesha, Krishnalila tarangini, Samasya-ratnakara, Sumano-ranjanam, Hayagriva-satakam, and Kavibhushanam. He also wrote commentary on Bharata champu, Murarinataka, and on verses of Naishadha in prose as Visvarupagadya, Hayagriva-dandaka, and Hanumat-dandaka, as well as stotra-s on Janardana, Sarasvati, Veeraraghava, etc.

About the Text

Just as introductory texts like Vedanta Sara serve as stepping stones for our entry into Vedanta, similarly, this text also greatly benefits us. Here, by properly distinguishing between conscious and unconscious entities, the author of the book creates a clear understanding of the entire creation. Based on this foundation, the book progresses further.

The author presents the path to moksha (liberation) with great ease and in a profound manner, inspiring enthusiasm to pursue that path. Similarly, discussions on the qualifications for spiritual inquiry, explanation of spiritual practices, the path of devotion, analysis of superimposition, and the characteristics of discrimination shine brightly in the heart of the book. Towards the end of the book, discrimination between the individual self and the supreme self, as well as a thorough investigation into the nature of liberation, are appropriately discussed. By studying just this one text, one grasps the essence of the principles that studying multiple texts would yield.
